Recognizing the need for a comprehensive overview of the Berlin ecosystem, Berlin Partner initiated a project to explore ways of enhancing their understanding of the startup landscape, particularly focusing on technology companies and AI startups.
“Innovation ecosystems are more likely to thrive when local leaders and developers play to a region’s existing skill base and institutional strengths” 〜 McKinsey, 2023
The project aimed to propose and validate a concept for obtaining better insights into the startup ecosystem, with the goal of enabling data-driven decision making, improved coordination, and more effective support initiatives.
The project began by gathering information on approximately 8,000 IT companies in Berlin, identified through the Wirtschaftszweige 62 and 63 classifications using NorthData. This initial dataset included information from trade and company registers.
To enrich the dataset with more detailed information about company activities, a custom web scraper was developed. This tool was designed to extract content from company websites, adapting to various website layouts.
